Beach Chic was the order of the day at Pinctada Cable Beach Polo as over 2,000 spectators embraced barefoot elegance as they watched top international polo players battle it out to win the Paspaley International Beach Polo Cup.
Following the success of the preliminarily round held on Saturday, Australia’s leading polo professionals and international players from New Zealand and Columbia took to Cable Beach to battle it out for the Broome International Airport Cup II Final and the Paspaley International Beach Polo Cup II Final.
As competition on the field heated up, participants prepared for ‘Style on the Sand’, beach polo’s answer to racing’s Fashion on the Field. Guest judges Australian supermodel Samantha Harris and Alexandra Brown from VOGUE magazine scouted the winning male and female who had embraced the theme of beach polo’s ‘relaxed and barefoot elegance’.
Commenting on today’s ‘Style on the Sand’, director of Pinctada Cable Beach Polo, Marilynne Paspaley AM said “The judges were looking for innovative styles that reflect the relaxed glamour of Australia’s only beach polo event and its location. Pinctada Cable Beach Polo 2014 is played on the pristine sands of Cable Beach flanked by the azure waters of the Indian Ocean and the Kimberley’s distinctive red pindan earth – this landscape always inspires some stunning and stylish beach chic creations which were on display today.”
The fashion stakes were high with VIP guests including international blogger and style icon Nicole Warne (Garry Pepper), TV personality James Tobin, Actor Tyler Atkins, X-Factor finalist Barry Southgate, celebrity DJ couple Daimon Downey & Georgia Gorman. Other VIPs, who enjoyed the tapas-style lunch within the Pinctada VIP Marquee, complete with Veuve Clicquot, Belvedere Vodka cocktails and Coopers beers, included Marilynne Paspaley, Christopher Paspaley, Marly & John Boyd & David Kirk, Captain of the All Blacks 1987.
In between the Broome International Airport Cup II and the Paspaley International Beach Polo Cup II, guests were treated to a fashion parade by ‘The Kimberly Girls’, who unveiled the European Spring Summer 2014 collection styled by Georgina Weir from Le Louvre.
A trending theme throughout the day was gemstone colours with bold prints complete with Paspaley Pearls – the ultimate accessory to complete any beach polo outfit. The female winner of ‘Style on the Sand’ was awarded with a Paspaley Australian South Sea Pearl Pendant necklace, valued at $3,310.
This weekend’s action finished with the Paspaley International Beach Polo Cup II Final which saw the GPG Group’s team of Paul Webb and New Zealander’s Ross Ainsley and Sam Hopkinson win the Cup from the Sadliers Nexus Logistics team of Clinton Wheatley, Jack Archibald and Matt Grimes.
“It’s been an absolute delight to host the players at the various polo functions we’ve held at Pinctada this weekend, but for me, the highlight of the weekend is the way the Broome community, the visiting tourists and the players united to celebrate this unique event. Next year it will be bigger and better again as we work towards a weeklong beach polo festival that showcases
Broome’s extraordinary landscape, culture, heritage and spirit.” Marilynne Paspaley AM concluded.
