‘Sensational Umbria’ is the title given by world-renowned photographer Steve McCurry to a brand new project of 100 photos commissioned by the Region of Umbria highlighting this important region of Italy.
The photographs are part of a bold initiative by the Region of Umbria to brand the Italian region, capturing images from all walks of life.
Steve McCurry has personally selected the fifteen images that will be shown during the month of November for the very first time in New York, which will open in a gallery exhibit at the Italian Trade Commission on November 8 (33 E 67th Street), as well as at Eataly (200 5th Avenue). Seven of the images have never been seen before.
“It is the first time that such a campaign has been done,” said President of Umbria, Catiuscia Marini. “It is for this reason that I asked Steve McCurry, an award-winning Magnum photographer who is highly respected and whose work is enjoyed by so many, to take these photos.
“The passion people have for the region of Umbria was captured perfectly by McCurry’s remarkable storytelling power. It was a great match.”
The Region of Umbria states that McCurry’s images reflect a land ricca di tempo or “rich in time,” standing in between the past and the present, and interpreted through the international eye of a great contemporary artist.

The objective of the Region of Umbria with this project is to show – through the universal language of the image – the everyday lives of its inhabitants, whether they be residents or tourists.
From its artisans, to its industries, its tourism activities, to its wine and food, these images capture the soul and energy of Umbria in a perfect example of visual storytelling.
These unpublished photographs will parallel The Region of Umbria’s promotional efforts during the month of November in the United States.
