Glitterati on the Go

By Chris Boyle

Designer downtime

Since showing her fall 2013 collection at New York’s Fashion Week, fashion designer Cynthia Rowley has been on an international travel tear with trips to Tanzania, Kenya, Zanzibar, São Paulo and Riviera Nayarit.

“I am on lockdown so much of the year that when I finish a collection, I’m just like, ‘Get me the heck out of here,’ and I just go like crazy,” she said. “Working so hard, you have escapist fantasy and that’s when I plan and book trips.”

She usually stays in hotels but in Mexico opted for Casa Privada, a four-bedroom, 4,500-square-foot retreat in vacation club Portico’s collection.

“The president of my company always does homes and it seems so much more comfortable,” she said. “I have friends who do it. It’s always like, ‘How do you organize it?’ Working with Portico made it easy.”

The avid surfer, who vacationed with her husband and their two daughters, spent the days on her board, working up an appetite. “Surf and eat, surf and eat. In this case, it was the perfect scenario.”

Fifty is the New 30

Mexico is also where actress Lisa Rinna and her actor husband Harry Hamlin usually make a getaway once or twice a year. No sooner did the couple return from a trip to Cancun’s Villa del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa that she was already thinking about a return trip to celebrate her 50th birthday this July.

“We hope to go to Garza Blanca in Puerto Vallarta for my big birthday,” she said. “We’d like to take a water taxi over to Yelapa from there.”

In Cancun, they swam with the dolphins and went to Coba to see the ruins, which she called “extraordinary.”

Despite their daughters being with them, they managed to have a romantic 16th wedding anniversary celebration.

“Harry and I walked on the beach and had a couple’s massage,” Rinna said. “The hotel had a beautiful anniversary cake for us. It was a great surprise.”

Owner’s Quarters

Sticking to the Mexico theme, tennis star Rafael Nadal and his girlfriend Maria Perello vacationed in Cozumel, where the Spanish heartthrob has invested in the recently renovated, 168-room, oceanfront Secrets Aura Cozumel Resort & Spa.

Since he’s in good with the owner, it’s no surprise that Rafa stayed in the Preferred Club Private Pool & Solarium Suite, which features a private roof-top terrace and infinity lap pool.

Expect to hear more about the athlete in Cozumel since he also invested in Sunscape Sabor, which officially reopened in April after a facelift.
