Hotel del Coronado, San Diego, California

By Elite Traveler

Since 1888, Hotel del Coronado has attracted the country’s most discerning travelers. Situated on 28 acres directly on the beach, the hotel’s grand, Victorian exterior and white, red-roofed structures are hard to miss. Though the hotel prides itself on constantly updating its amenities for the modern traveler, the hotel recently invested in a complete reimagination of Hotel del Coronado that will be completed by 2021.

But those who love the storied resort don’t have to worry about the historical aspects going away: Part of the multiphase renovation includes a further telling of the story of The Del’s illustrious history and more than 130 years in business. For example, the entry will be enhanced with a Victorian-inspired grand entrance; the redo will preserve the iconic Power Plant, Laundry, Ice House and Oxford Building structures; and it will reconstruct the outdoor venues. Guests will still have beachfront access and the beloved views over the Pacific Ocean.

Stay

Cabana Room

Size: 398 sq ft Nightly rate: From $579

As part of the hotel’s extensive renovation and expansion, Hotel del Coronado has all-new Cabana Rooms for guests. These beachfront rooms directly face the vast, open beach, and the lower-level ones have chic outdoor patios with a striped cabana, fire pit, daybed and many seating areas for enjoying glittering orange sunsets over the Pacific Ocean. The room’s interiors have a neutral color palette with pops of blue and gold that reflect the ocean and the sun. Simple yet stylish, they encourage you to spend plenty of time in your cabana, with a view of the beach via sliding glass doors.

Dine

From upscale sustainable seafood overlooking the mighty Pacific to alfresco fire pits with front-row views of dazzling sunsets, The Del’s eight dining venues offer something for everyone. Serea, Chef JoJo Ruiz’s sea-to-table restaurant, features the very best seafood that San Diego has to offer. Choose to dine in the airy space or experience the liveliness of the beachfront. Don’t forget to check out the other amazing restaurants: Sun Deck, Eno Market & Pizzeria, Sheerwater, Beach & Taco Shack, Babcock & Story Bar or the legendary Crown Room Brunch.

Enjoy

The Del is where beach life comes to life! From plush daybeds and sand chairs just steps from the shore to yoga on the beach, mermaid fitness classes (yes, really) or relaxing pool cabanas, the hotel is always hosting exciting activities for families and couples on-property, including thrilling water sports such as stand-up paddleboarding and surfing. Book a private lesson for yourself or the whole family — there’s even a photography package so you can take home pictures of these cherished memories spent with your loved ones. Golfers rejoice: The area has more than 80 courses to choose from, including the legendary Torrey Pines course in La Jolla. Once you retreat from an exciting day of activities, enjoy a private beach bonfire with s’mores and other fireside treats at Roast.
