Labotessa Hotel Set to Open in Cape Town

By Alex Martin

The transformation of one of South Africa’s oldest buildings into one of its most exclusive destinations will be completed Monday with the grand opening of the new luxury LABOTESSA Hotel.

Set in a historic 17th-century congressional church, LABOTESSA will become the first hotel in Cape Town’s historic Church Square. Every part of the extensive refurbishment has been conceptualized to evoke old-world grandeur fused with a relaxed atmosphere.

Commissioned works by local artists and antique pieces weave a narrative inspired by the city’s European influences. The result is incredibly impressive for a debut project by first-time hoteliers Jan Fourie and Johan du Plessis.

“We are delighted to begin our foray into hotel ownership with one of South Africa’s oldest buildings, which has been a true testament to the country’s rich history and heritage,” says Du Plessis, LABOTESSA founder and owner. “LABOTESSA is a culmination of our affinity for exceptional design, relaxed hospitality, and our connection to the city of Cape Town.”

The hotel aims to balance personal service with the independence of residential living. Each of the hotel’s seven suites features private elevator access, Juliet balcony and jaw-dropping views of Lions Head and Table Mountain. It will also boast one of Cape Town’s biggest suites, The Governor Suite.

The Governor Suite

Named after Simon van der Stel, the first Governor of the Cape, this 2,230-square-feet space spans two floors and offers the best views across Church Square and the surrounding mountains. Built completely from scratch on the hotel’s top floor, the suite has a much more modern feel than the rest of the hotel. The floating staircase, private plunge pool and floor-to-ceiling windows add to its modernity while the lounge areas and fully-equipped kitchen lend a residential quality.

The Six Signature Suites are located on the hotel’s mezzanine level and feature a more casual open-plan design. The high ceilings are designed to make it look and feel spaciousness while French oak floors give an unmistakable sense of classic luxury.

The dining options are also exciting with the popular Starling’s Cafe taking residence within the hotel. Famed for its breakfasts and use of ethically-sourced and organic products, this will be Starling’s second location in Cape Town. The hotel also sits in close proximity to the V&A Waterfront, the city’s main hub of shops, bars and restaurants.
