LINLEY Releases Designs Inspired By Mixed Media

By Zahra Al-Kateb

This year for Masterpiece, LINLEY is continuing its tradition of creating extraordinary pieces of furniture by creating a modern lounge chair that takes inspiration from a traditional wing back chair and the creations designed by the Danish  genius Hans Wegner.

Organic and functional, the Silhouette Chair is strikingly crafted from a single copper panel which has been individually hand rolled and hammered. This age-old technique used by coachbuilders in the restoration and customisation of classic cars, enables the craftsman to form compound curves from a flat sheet.

This highly skilled and labour intensive production method ensures a flowing and ergonomic form that fits seamlessly with the form of a human body. The engineered sheet of copper is then clad on one face with neoprene,  and finished with a luxuriously soft aniline leather, which is seamlessly wrapped around the rolled copper edge ensuring the fluid lines of the chair’s silhouette continue.

The result is an exquisite piece of furniture: functional in its form and  elegant in design. Reminiscent of Hans Wegner, LINLEY have stripped the traditional chair of its outer style and allowed its pure construction to shine. Combining age-old techniques with innovative materials the Silhouette Chair exudes sophistication and comfort.

Designed to aid the finishing touches of getting ready for a party or event, the sophisticated cabinet opens to reveal an array of shelves, drawers and compartments for storing jewellery, make up, hair brushes and perfume bottles as well as a large mirror to ensure the perfect look before leaving the house. An integrated stool covered in quilted grey leather sits beneath the cabinet creating a seamless outline but also allowing for comfort when removed from underneath to sit on.

Synonymous with elegance, the Grace cabinet was inspired by the facets and repetition of patterns in precious stones and diamonds in particular. The graceful curves are accentuated by grey eucalyptus which is pressed over a faceted form to create a velvety quilted effect.

Innovative techniques have been employed by LINLEY craftsmen to produce this unusual and intriguing finish. The process involves a level of expertise and intricacy that can only be achieved by the very finest craftsmen. Meticulous attention to detail, precision and delicacy are brought together to ensure the desired effect is realised to a superlative quality.

The dove grey of the sculptural veneer oozes sophistication, its shimmering surface reflecting the light to glisten like a cut diamond. Accentuating the curves by providing a
contrast both in material and colour, the rich polished brass frame, handles and stringing
add a lustrous and opulent touch.

More than just a functional piece of furniture, this glorious cabinet is a work of art in its own  right. Majestic, elegant, intriguing and opulent, you cannot help but be captured by its shimmering presence.

An exploration of light, texture and tapestry has driven the design with the aim of enhancing the beauty of natural veneer through shape and  movement. The result is a five panel screen whose surface is an innovative 3D weave of fine materials created in marquetry; challenging the idea that marquetry is normally a 2D process.

The free standing screen is designed as a room divider which provides different yet equal interest and intrigue from each side. Both sides were designed using the projection of light onto form as inspiration. The resulting texture and visual illusion encourages the viewer to interact with the screen, not only as a functional piece of furniture but as an objet d’art.

Rather than designing a particular pattern or scene like previous marquetry panels seen at LINLEY, the composition was designed using computer generated visualisations controlling light, shadow and reflection. The result is a projection of these qualities onto this five panel free standing screen. The predominant grey veneer is brought to life and elegantly highlighted by dusty orange and copper tones which seem to move across the apparent rippled surface, with a sense of calm and serenity that draws you in. Each piece of veneer was selected and specifically placed to create a gradient effect of colour transitioning up the screen. At first the viewer will sense the drama in its apparent lighting and the illusion of movement in the screen, the way that fabric would move in a breeze but upon closer examination the details of wood and metal become apparent and the tactile nature will encourage them to touch the screen to understand and
appreciate the remarkable texture.
