Mexico’s Next Big Thing

By Chris Boyle

Nizuc Resort & Spa

Nizuc Resort & Spa

When Las Brisas with its white and pink casitas with private pools opened some 50 years ago, one of the world’s most iconic hotels was born, and Acapulco became a reference like Monaco or St. Tropez.

In May, Brisas Hotel Collection and Mexico’s tourism industry is hoping Nizuc, 20 minutes from Cancun airport at the “gateway to Riviera Maya” will create that same type of buzz. Set on the site of a former residence of the Mexican President, the resort has already been accepted by Preferred Hotels & Resorts prior to its opening. All accommodations are suites, but for elite travelers there are a number of signature suites, several with 5,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space.

Top of the pecking order is the two-bedroom 5,550 sq ft Presidential Suite Villa that includes a rooftop sundeck and 2,280 sq ft lounge patio suited for entertaining. Of course there is a private pool too. The Nizuc Villa offers similar space and features an infinity pool, while the Garden Pool Villas have 1,510 sq ft indoor space. Then there are the Garden Pool Villas with Pavilions that feature an infinity pool with waterfall. There are literally another half dozen suite types, many featuring over a thousand feet of indoor space, private infinity pools and such. All together 73 of the 274 suites fall into the signature category.

Vincent Wallez, a rising star in the culinary world, will oversee six restaurants as well as private dinners on the beach, pier or villa for the ultimate romantic evening.

Needless to say there will be an extensive 30,000-square-foot-spa (with ESPA) with a combination of Mayan and European treatments. A full fitness and wellness program offers not only yoga and pilates but juicing, breathing techniques, music therapy, art therapy and Mayan abdominal massages. For families there is a children’s club offering tennis, kayaking, kids’ cooking classes, artisanal crafts, music and dance.

Conference and Events will be popular as the resort is not only easily accessible by private jet to Cancun but the airport boasts nonstop commercial airline flights throughout North America, Europe and Latin America so it is easy to fly the team in. There will be 8,497 feet of meeting space and according Sales Manager Sofia de la Rosa – who was representing the property during Tianguis – the expectation is that the resort will create substantial buzz for the destination. Soft opening is at the end of this month, with the full opening in May.
