Elite Gaming: Fabulous Foxwoods

By Chris Boyle

By Mike Espindle

Grand-Pequot-LobbyxWhile Monte Carlo, Macau, Las Vegas or even Atlantic City quickly come to mind when you mention high-stakes gaming, at over six million square feet of nonstop gaming, entertainment and dining excitement, Foxwoods Resort Casino in Eastern Connecticut is the largest gaming destination in the Western Hemisphere.

And with the right itinerary, it can also be one of the most luxurious. During my recent visit I was hosted in a very large one-bedroom Villa accommodation in the top-of-the-line Grand Pequot Tower hotel (there is also a chic four-star MGM Grand hotel on the property among other accommodations).

For the ultimate base of operations, look into booking the Tower’s residential luxe duplex 5,000-square-foot Mashantucket Suite (Suite 2210). Sporting three bedrooms, six baths, dual winding staircases, a formal dining room, full entertainment bar, en suite elevator and more, this suite is strictly reserved for high-rollers.

The views from the Villas, on the 22nd and 23rd floors, overlook the heavily wooded Mashatucket Pequot Tribal Reservation. While you are very close to urban centers like Hartford and Providence, RI, you’ll feel ample privacy and relaxation as a counterpoint to the resort’s 24-hour excitement–which can go beyond simple gaming and casino thrills.

Foxwoods attracts major entertainment acts (I caught Aerosmith as well as Cedric the Entertainer during my very brief stay) with ample VIP access in both the MGM Grand Theater and smaller Fox Theater.

Fine dining options abound, with a signature restaurant from foodie favorite David Burke (David Burke Prime) probably heading up the cuisine scene here. Try the 75-day Himalayan Salt dry-aged ribeye; a kind of meat-based epiphany to be sure. Paragon in the Pequot Tower also offers spectacular dining, there is an outpost of Tom Colicchio’s CraftSteak and even the resort’s banquet staff have been invited to cook at the James Beard House this summer.

The excellent Lake of Isles Golf Course offers duffers a break from the gaming, two excellent spas and boutiques from Cartier, Chopard, Judith Ripka, Bulgari and other luxury retailers will give high-end shoppers plenty to do.

But gaming is the heart of the operation, make no mistake. While there are high-stakes variants on nearly every casino game known to man (there is even high-stakes Bingo!) at about 350 tables, thousands of slots options and a race book, look into a night at the StarGazer Casino on the top floor of the Pequot Tower. This European-style private salon is by invitation only and will ensure you and your party have endless high stakes fun in a secluded, secure and luxury environment. Best of luck!
