Deciding how and where to celebrate New Year’s Eve can be a fraught and frustrating process. Someone’s perfect evening can range from peace and quiet sitting by the fire to an all-out party underneath a spectacular fireworks display.
Few places are more magical over the holiday season than the United Kingdom and, despite its famously small size, it has enough depth in quality to offer a New Year’s Eve experience to suit all styles and tastes. You just need to know where to find it.
Elite Traveler now brings you five of the best luxury hotels that offer a wide choice of settings to make sure you get 2019 off to a perfect start.
The multiple award-winning Samling Hotel is situated in the England’s Lake District, which was recently awarded with Unesco world heritage status. Set in their own corner of Lake Windermere over 67 acres of land, guests can enjoy stunning views from the comfort of the hotel’s signature suites, which are aptly named after locations within the famously scenic region. From secluded countryside and vast open spaces to being in the thick of the action, the world-renowned Corinthia Hotel could hardly be situated closer to one of the biggest and best New Year’s fireworks displays on the entire planet. The hotel’s Royal Suite provides one of the best and certainly the most exclusive view of the London Eye, where the fireworks display takes place. There is also an extra special set menu on offer from two-Michelin star chef Tom Kerridge in his still freshly opened Bar and Grill restaurant.
Scotland have such a unique way of celebrating the new year that they have made their own word for it, Hogmanay. The Balmoral in Edinburgh offers guests the chance to experience this cultural gem in luxury surroundings at their exclusive Gala Ball. The evening begins with a traditional performance of bagpipes and drums from the Royal Burgh of Stirling before a four-course dinner is served. A live ceilidh band will then entertain guests into the early hours of 2019 before they return to luxury accommodation to rest their inevitably sore feet.
Known as England’s original party house for aristocrats, Cliveden House has seen many unforgettable New Year’s Eve bashes over its 350-year history. With past guests such as Winston Churchill and the Beatles, the house has long been considered a retreat for the rich and famous and is now offering guests the chance to see in the New Year befitting of these past residents. A three-day package includes a four-course dinner on New Year’s Eve followed by a live DJ until the early hours. A much-needed late start follows on New Year’s Day before a three-course evening dinner.
Chewton Glen is another superb example of a typical English country house but is more famous for its world-class spa facilities, something that may come into its own when you awake from the hedonistic New Year’s Eve celebrations. A fine dining experience is followed by a black tie ball into the wee hours of the night. New Year’s Day brunch is accompanied with smooth sounds of a live jazz band before another gourmet dinner is served in the evening. In between the champagne and plethora of fine food, guests can relax in Europe’s largest hydrotherapy pool.
