This is the main event in the annual Voga alla Veneta rowing calendar.
Before the race there is an impressive procession of brightly colored 16th-century boats on the Grand Canal. Gondoliers in period costume carry the ‘Doge’, the ‘Doge’s wife’ and all the high-ranking Venetian officials along the canal. The glorious parade evokes memories of what was once of the most powerful and influential maritime republic. There are four races held on the day. The best known and most exciting is the Campioni su Gonolini which sees a series of small, racing gondolas speeding down the canal. The crews are all decked out in period dress adding to this colorful event.
