When the world’s most famous golfer—one lurking within reach of the title of “best ever”— sets his sights on course, the resulting terrain is sure to be as inventive and dynamic as the player himself. Diamante Cabo San Lucas realize this, recently partnering with Tiger Woods and his company, Tiger Woods Design, to craft a new 18-hole, 7,300 yard championship golf course.
The new golf course, dubbed “El Cardonal”, will be Diamante’s second, joining the resort’s already existing championship golf course, Diamante Dunes, that’s natural links course layout (developed by another lauded PGA Pro, Davis Love III) opened in 2009. The $12 million course is scheduled for a 2014 opening.
Influenced by Woods’s time spent at Stanford University, El Cardonal’s design will be reminiscent of old-style California courses. The firm plans to integrate Diamante’s rolling hills and panoramic views into the design, strategically scattering bunkers throughout the course to encourage players to utilize both tactics and skill to carry hazards off the tees. The bunkers will have a traditional look while both natural and irregular contours will be preserved in wide fairways. A variety of hole types will offer players both shot-making opportunities and a playable experience for all skill levels.
Tiger explains, “I set up the golf strategy to make golfers think and make choices. Regardless of your handicap, there are going to be different ways to play every hole. Angles of approach are going to be very important and will dictate the type of shots you should consider. I love this kind of golf.” And if one of the sporting world’s all-time greats loves it, chances are you will too.
