Omega Spring 2009 Preview

By Pardhasaradhi Gonuguntla

OMEGA joins the world in celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing with the release of the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11 “40th Anniversary” Limited Edition Watch.

This new timepiece is inspired by the original OMEGA Moonwatch that was worn during this momentous milestone. Some key aspects of the watch include a small seconds counter (sub-dial) that has been created in the form of a medallion that features an adaptation of Apollo 11’s famous mission patch: an eagle descends to the lunar surface with an olive branch representing peace in its claws. In the distance, far above the horizon, the earth is visible. The patch, interestingly, was designed by Michael Collins who remained in the Apollo 11 capsule as Command Module Pilot while his colleagues Armstrong and Aldrin were in the Lunar Module and on the moon.

The watch’s hour, minute and red-tipped chronograph seconds hands are coated with Super-LumiNova. The minute and hour chronograph counter hands are white and the brushed, rhodium-plated small seconds hand offers an attractive contrast to the medallion on the counter.

When OMEGA launched its Co-Axial calibre 2500 in 1999, the entire mechanical watch industry was put on notice. The Co-Axial Escapement in the calibre was the first practical new mechanical watch escapement to be launched in 250 years.

In simple terms, the escapement is the heart of the mechanical watch, as it maintains the oscillations of the balance, the watch’s regulating mechanism. Following the launch of the Co-Axial calibre in 1999, OMEGA has continued to refine and improve the technology. Ten years since the launch of this groundbreaking technology, OMEGA has developed a limited edition timepiece to commemorate this momentous anniversary.

Actress Nicole Kidman, world-acclaimed actress and stunning ambassador for OMEGA watches, was so enamored by the new Planet Ocean ‘Jewellery’ Co-Axial chronograph when wearing it for a recent shoot that she didn’t want to take it off! But that was just the prototype, and now she is keenly awaiting the delivery of one of the first samples of this fabulous new model.

The Planet Ocean ‘Jewellery’ Co-Axial Timepieces take OMEGA in more than one exciting new direction. Part of the Seamaster family, they are fully functional diver’s watches with all of the technical prowess implied by OMEGA’s expertise in this field. However, they are also luxuriantly diamond-set, with painstaking craft worthy of the best jewellery watches.

The new Seamaster Aqua Terra Collection seamlessly blends eye-catching design excellence and innovative 21st century watchmaking technology. The collection carries on the mechanical watch revolution which has been taking place at OMEGA since the launch of the first Co-Axial calibre in 1999. The watches in the Collection are visually striking with their “Teak Concept” dials whose vertical lines suggest the wooden decks on luxury boats.
