ULYSSE NARDIN

By Chris Boyle

EXCEPTION AS A RULE. HISTORY IN TIME.

Ulysse Nardin

Leading the world watchmaking community in unrivaled developments, the Swiss manufacturer Ulysse Nardin continues its passionate spirit of invention.

Since its inception in 1848, Ulysse Nardin has received the greatest number of patents in mechanical watchmaking. Awarded for InnoVision, a spectacular watch concept that represented the groundbreaking use of silicium, among ten additional technical feats, this creation gives a nod to Ulysse Nardin’s Freak, one of the cleverest timepieces ever created and the first to use silicon. The Freak showcased Ulysse Nardin’s scientific knowledge and progressive engineering like no other. It was awarded the Innovation Prize, along with the Genghis Khan, GMT + Perpetual and the Sonata. Other landmark achievements by Ulysse Nardin include Ludwig Oechslin’s completion of the Trilogy of Time, featuring the Astrolabium, the Planetarium and the Tellurium. Oechslin returned to the cosmos for inspiration and revealed the Moonstruck, which concentrates on the moon and its effects on earth. Fast forward to 2012 and Ulysse Nardin expands its roster of breakthroughs with the conceived and executed entirely in-house Caliber UN-118 of the Marine Chronometer Manufacture, featuring a DIAMonSil anchor escapement, a revolutionary alliance of diamond and silicon.

Steadfast in its journey to remain in the lead, Ulysse Nardin looks to its own universe to plot its course.

ALEXANDER THE GREAT

Ulysse Nardin was one of the earliest manufacturers to fuel the rebirth of the minute repeater, which is made more unique through the inclusion of animated figures called jaquemarts on the dial.

Minute repeaters are universally considered some of the most difficult watches to create. The unconquerable hero of Greek history inspires Ulysse Nardin’s Alexander the Great: Westminster Carillon Tourbillon Jaquemarts Minute Repeater. Ref: 786-90.

FREAK COLLECTION

Ulysse Nardin Freak Collection

Acclaimed for its thousands of firsts in watchmaking, Ulysse Nardin takes the lead in ingenuity once again with the Freak Diavolo.

Due to the ultra-modern, minimalist and unconventional design of the Freak’s tourbillion carrousel— one that possessed no true dial, crown or hands—and being the first timepiece to successfully present escapement wheels constructed of silicium, the Freak created a new milestone in the watch industry (Freak Diavolo 2080-11: $153,500; Freak 28’800 V/h 026-88: $85,000).

SONATA/EL TORO

Ulysse Nardin GMT Perpetual

The Ulysse Nardin GMT Perpetual and Sonata collections represent the world’s most functional and innovate timepieces, and Ulysse Nardin’s GMT Perpetual remains the only perpetual timepiece allowing the user to adjust all of its calendar displays with one single crown.

The Sonata Streamline, with its in-house developed and manufactured movement, combines a novel alarm setting with a countdown indicator and a patented dual-time system (Sonata Streamline 645-00-4: $39,000; El Toro 329-00: $69,900).

CIRCUS AVENTURINE

Circus Aventurine

A circus scene of six gold hand-carved figures decorates the blue aventurine dial of this exceptional timepiece.

When the minute repeater lever is activated, the monkey begins interfering in the ballgame of the clown; this movement indicates the hour chiming. The trainer with the whip reaches out to the tiger, indicating the quarters. The tiger stretches its paw, indicating the minutes. The bear bows in front of the ballet dancer while the chiming mechanism is activated ($ 425,000).

ROYAL BLUE TOURBILLION

Blue is the color of royalty and mystery.

The Royal Blue timepiece houses a tourbillon of incomparable elegance, combining aesthetics with the art of mechanical watchmaking. The bridges and main plates are crafted of blue sapphire crystal, making the flying tourbillon itself float in empty space. The movement parts are skeletonized and aligned in a perfect symmetry withholding their secrets. An invisible winding system adds to the mystery ($320,000).

MOONSTRUCK
