The 5 Best Rums in the World

By Samantha Coles

Rum has come a long way since being part of a sailor’s daily ration. A drink that transports us to white sands and palm trees, we bring you the world’s best rum.

The Gran Reserva De La Familia Serralles, $1,865

screen-shot-2016-11-28-at-13-25-45Don Q marked its 150th anniversary of rum making with a very limited edition bottle, blending 20 year-old rums from its oldest warehouses, hand-selected by sixth-generation distiller Roberto Serralles. Founded in 1865 by Juan Serralles, he created the first casks of rum using a pot still imported from France and would later name the company after Don Quixote.

The special blend comes in a bespoke presentation box, specifically designed to be kept as a souvenir. The three-piece box is made of solid wood and includes an inset top panel with laser etched ink in-filled text, designed to replicate the barrels that aged the 20-year-old rum. The presentation box also includes a certificate of authenticity and brand history booklet.

Paying homage to the company’s birth year, only 1,865 bottles have been produced.

Saint James Cuvee 250th Anniversary, $950

One of the oldest rum brands, Saint James has been producing rum since 1765. Saint James Rum marks its 250th anniversary by releasing a limited edition cuvee, paying homage to the original blend. Saint James Rum was founded on the island of Martinique, and the iconic Rhum Agricole is still produced on the Carribean Island – the only rum in the world that has an AOC – a decree for the “controlled designation of origin”.

“It is an ultra-premium blend of six of the best Saint James vintages, presented in a luxurious glass flagon with embossed metal neck,” said international brand manager Nadège Perrot.

As well as unveiling the anniversary curvee, the distillery enjoyed various celebrations in Marinique to celebrate 250 years of rum production.

Legacy by Angostura, $25,000

Created by Angostura, only 20 bottles of the Angostura have ever been produced for global distribution. Chosen from Angostura’s smoothest blends from 80,000 barrels, the spirit is comprised of seven Angostura rums, each with a minimum age of 17 years.

The decanters are composed of crystal and silver, and were handcrafted by Asprey of London (jewelers to the Prince of Wales) and each took over 56 hours to complete using ten different master craftsmen.

50-year-old Appleton Estate, Jamaica Independence Reserve, $6,630

screen-shot-2016-11-28-at-13-40-04In 1962, Appleton rum set aside barrels of different rums with the intention of aging them for 50 years, to then bottle and sell them on the 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence from England. Only 800 bottles of the rum have been created, and its bouquet is described as “powerful oak infused with rich, luxurious vanilla and layered with cinnamon, maple and orange peel.”
